New blog – Sumslife101

I’ve been really bad and not posted anything on here for quite some time, the reason behind this is I haven’t been reading much (shock horror i know). I am in a reading slump/funk and I’m still not out of it. I’m rereading my favourite books to help me get out of it but I’ve already reviewed them on here. That’s why i’ve been AWOL. I’ve also been mega busy with work (my new job is stressful) and I’ve been on an amazing holiday to Walt Disney World Florida for 2 weeks. I do love blogging so I decided to set a new blog of all my other thoughts/review/hauls. Please feel free to check that out. Hopefully I will get back into book blogging so. I’m hoping to get out of my slump considering it’s lasted about 6 months!! Thank you to all you guys for sticking with me even though I haven’t been post. It means the world to me.

The Prison Guard’s Son – Ursula Sinclair (Young Guns # 1)

51i7rtzp9jlI’ve been in a little bit of a book funk but this book helped me overcome it. This is why it’s been so much time since I posted a review.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Warning this book does contain crude and bad language. I’d say this book is for 18 + due to this and including some adult scenes.

Synopsis:

I can only be who I am.

Pike

I never knew my mother. I tell people she died shortly after I was born, that stops any more questions. So I don’t have to say she was a convicted felon who died while in prison. Nor do I have to talk about the fact that my father was one of her guards. He raised me as best he could. The one thing I never had or wanted was a family, he was family enough. The only other thing I ever needed was my music. I never pretended to be anything other than what I am, but then she entered my life and my music suffered. I needed to be someone else, anyone else or I could never have her. She could never know the truth about me or I wouldn’t be there to save her.

Eryn
I never knew my father. Growing up in a large extended family, I was never alone. I just grew up without a father. He died before I was born and while I always had adult male relatives to help guide me, I still missed him. He never even knew of my existence, but I felt his presence every day of my life. His legacy helped shape me. Then I heard this voice one day, singing with such a soul deep loneliness. I had to respond. But when I did, he turned my world upside down. Then I found out the truth.

Before I go into my review here’s a sneak peak of the book:

Pike

My earliest memories are of noises really, more than images. The images are kind of jumbled together, all these—at least for a kid—giant people surround me. Some smiling at me others with mean looks on their faces, all really scary and I was terrified. But the sounds. Those I would never forget. The clamor metal makes when it strikes against more metal. The clang of a gate being slammed shut.

I remember turning around and wanting to run back the way we’d come. But my dad held tightly to my small hand in his much larger one and tugged me behind him, not once breaking stride. When I began to cry, he ended up picking me up and I wrapped my arms around him, burying my face in his neck.

“It’s going to be fine John. You want to see your mama don’t ya?”

“No! Don’t wanna. Wanna go home.”

“We will son, but…well your mom, she wants to see you. She wants to say goodbye before she goes away for good.”

“She’s going away. Where? Is she coming home with us?”

“No son.” My father’s voice kinda sounded funny.

I raised my head to look at him and touched the side of his face. “Why?”

“She can’t. But she wanted to see you…to say goodbye and so that you won’t forget her.”

“I don’t ‘member her.”

He pulled me against his chest and shook.

That scared me more than anything my dad never cried and even as young as I was I knew that’s what he was doing so I cried too. By then I’d noticed we’d walked into a room where there was a bed and a woman lay on it.

He put me down and wiped his face. Taking my hand, we walked over to the side of the bed and the woman on it.

This time it was I who held tightly to him. “Is she sleeping, Pa?”

The woman’s eyes suddenly opened, they were the same gray green as mine.

“Are you my mama?” I asked.

Then she too began to cry. She raised her hand to touch the top of my hair, there was some kind of wire and tubes attached to her arm.

I touched one. “What’s that?”

“An IV,” she said in a whispery voice.

“What’s it for?”

“It’s making sure I’m here long enough to see you one last time. And yes, I’m your mama.”

“Pa said you’re not coming home with us. Why? Don’t you like us?”

“I love you both. So much. I want nothing more than to come home with you—but I can’t.”

At this something really strange happened, my dad dropped to his knees beside me and no longer tried to hide his tears. He held me around the waist and held onto my mama’s hand and they were both crying now.

As young as I was, sadness overwhelmed me and all I could do was cry too.

Review:

Do you ever start reading a book and think why didn’t I pick this one up sooner? Well that’s exactly what happened to me with this book. I wish I had picked it up sooner as I loved it. This is the first time I have read a book by Ursula Sinclair but it certainly won’t be the last. This book is for you if you are looking for a strong heroine with a kind of cocky but not too arrogant alpha male. I loved both Eryn and Pike as the main characters, there romance wasn’t sweet in an awww sense but it was scorching as this book will singe my hand offs way. I’d say the sex scenes between them are detailed, but i don’t think it’s explicit because I have read others that are more explicit. Eryn and Pike has this chemistry going on which I enjoyed as it made the characters have more depth and more 3D.

Pike is a rock star and Eryn is a lawyer, they meet as Eryn wants to represent pike. It’s instant attraction from that point on. The story has some action, including bad guys too. The story kept you hooked in wanting to know what was going to happen next. I liked the writing, the story was told from both Pikes and Eryns POV, but it was made clear in each chapter who’s POV it was. I love books where we can get into the heads of both characters rather than having to guess what one of them is thinking or feeling.

Without spoiling the book I have to admit I didn’t see the ‘connection’ nearing the end of the book coming. That took me by surprise.

Once I finished reading this I looked on Goodreads to post my review and saw some people commented that there was just sex and more sex in this story. I don’t think so. There was some don’t get me wrong but there was a story to go with it. I really enjoyed the story and will be looking forward to reading the other books in this series.

I’d recommend this book.

Check it out on Amazon or Book Depository (affiliate links) if you’re interested in purchasing it.

Happy Reading!

Paradise – Judith Mcnaught (Second Opportunities #1)

I should probably put a disclaimer that if you’re never read a Judith Mcnaught book and you are planning to there is going to be angst, pain, most like a second chance romance and the story will stay on your mind for a long time after you’ve read the final chapter. I’ve noticed in the books I’ve read there is a routine which goes like background story, misunderstanding/breakup and then years later a chance at reconciliation. I love her books and even though I know this, I love reading them as she has a way with words. For me it’s all about the happy ending and I know Judith Mcnaught delivers this, well she has in the books i’ve read so far.

Synopsis:

Corporate raider Matthew Farrell had come a long way from the poor, scruffy kid of Indiana’s steel mills. A long way from the country club where, feeling like an outsider, he had dared to fall in love with a beautiful blonde named Meredith Bancroft, and known a once-in-a-lifetime passion and betrayal that sill haunted his memory… Now world leaders courted him, the media watched his every move, and he was ready to move in on the Bancroft empire.

A cool, poised executive in her family’s legendary department store chain, Meredith had once defied her father for the sexually magnetic, intense Matt Farrell — and their brief, ill fated marriage was the disastrous outcome. Now, as the Bancroft firm is threatened by a hostile takeover, Meredith is forced to confront Matt. As tensions build between them, bittersweet memories rise to the surface, leaving them suspicious, restless, and uncertain. Will they be able to believe in each other — and grasp the tender miracle that is before them?

Review:

For me the sign that I love the book that I’m reading is when I get emotionally involved with the characters and story. I was so emotionally invested in this story that when Matt and Meredith talked about their misunderstanding at the farm I bawled my eyes out.  I’m not talking about one or two tears, I mean a proper cry with red rimmed eyes and snot running (lovely image right?). This book was just so good, it was emotional at parts but it was also well paced, well written, didn’t drag and a really good story.

“Some people feel love in their hearts, Julie. Some of us feel it all way into our souls. We’re the ones who can’t forget.”

Both the main characters deserved their happy ending and second chance. I liked both Matt and Meredith, their characters developed throughout the book. The secondary characters weren’t focused on so much but they also were well written and what I liked most is that Lisa stuck by Meredith throughout it all as her friend and Meredith did the same. Usually you find that in books this does not happen for drama, so it made a nice change.

I love the writing in this book Judith Mcnaught is such a great writer in my opinion, the synopsis draws you in but it’s the writing and story that makes you want to what what happens without putting the book down to take a break. This book was just so amazing, I cannot say that enough.

“You can’t outwit fate by trying to stand on the sidelines and place little side bets about the outcome of life. Either you wade in and risk everything to play the game, or you don’t play at all. And if you don’t play, you can’t win.”

The only drawback for me with this book though is how Meredith felt about her father, I don’t understand why she could never stop trying to make him happy. This sounds horrible but she forgave her father so much after all he done and I just do not think he deserved it. I think Judith tried to explain that her father loved her in his own gruff way but that just did not wash with me. In that way I think Meredith was too perfect in that sense, I don’t know if I’m being too unforgivable but I feel if a father or mother lets say put someone through what Meredith went through then there would be a grudge or atleast a distance in the relationship.  I was glad when Meredith stood up to her father, she needed to do that.

I won’t say too much about the story because I want you to discover it yourself but I can say it will stay with you after you’ve read the last page and put the book down.

Happy Reading!!

P.s. Has one read this book and have an recommendations of books like this?

Where I’ve been – Cyprus Delights

It’s been quite some time since my last post so I thought share what I’d been up to. I went to Aiya Napa in Cyprus for an all girls holiday with my cousins for a week then spent the weekend in London.

IMG_20160516_083313

I was in Ayia Napa between 6th to 13th May, we didn’t arrive until late on 6th May so all we did was have dinner at the hotel and go to bed. We stayed at the Nissi Park Hotel. It was lovely, we were all inclusive which was great too. One of the best things about the hotel is the staff they were so friendly and helpful, the hotel is a 3 star one but I would say if you’re planning to go Cyprus stay there it’s really nice. The hotel itself is clean and nicely laid out, i adore the colour scheme as I like neutral colours. In general the public transport is good, our hotel had bus stops quite near so we could jump on and go Larnaca, Nicosia or Pafos if we wished.

I booked throughThomas cook and had no problems at all. For the hotel website click here if you’re interested in checking it out.

We did so many activities out there that it was unreal, we only had 2 days at the beach the rest was cramming in activities. I attempted scuba diving for the first time. This was scary but so worth it, I cannot swim well but I went to a scuba place who were happy to let me scuba even though I was a novice swimmer, they catered to your needs. For the life of me I cannot remember the name but I will put a link in once I find out who the company where. We also went for a camel ride at the Camel park, that was fun too. We did also go on the Red bus village tour, if your going to Cyprus and are interested in knowing the history i’d recommend this tour, the tour guide Ian was so knowledgeable and friendly, we all really enjoyed it and learnt a lot. We watched the sun rise from Cape greco, and so much more. It really was a brilliant holiday. I even managed to make some time to read haha.

This is what I’ve been up to over the last week or so. If your planning a holiday and don’t know where to go then go Cyprus! It is amazing and the weather is great.

Have anyone else been to Cyprus before?

New book unboxing – Forbidden Planet

My excitement knows no bounds today as I receive my first order from forbidden planet which contained one of my favourite author’s Nalini Singh books. I love her guild hunter series and have been reading these books for years, and will continue to read the series as there are more books planned. Imagine my disappointment when I learned she was coming to London, which is only an hour and a half drive away from where I live to sign Archangels Enigma at Forbidden Planet but I couldn’t go because of work. I know the joys of working life. However Forbidden Planet the wonderful people that they were selling the signed books for people who wanted them and couldn’t make it. I already own archangels enigma but I couldn’t turn a signed book by one of my favourite authors down. So I ordered it and it finally came today!

So I thought I’d share the unboxing.

Forbidden Planet unfortunately don’t have signed copies of the book left but if you live in the Uk and are interested in purchasing the normal book from them, then click here. This is one of my best book buys this year, it going to be a prized possession on my bookshelf. I paid for this book and the post is not sponsored or anything 🙂

Happy Reading! Has anyone else purchased any new signed book or any book you’re excited about recently?

Don’t you hate it when..

Someone spoils a book or film for you by telling you the ending or a major spoiler?

I did a blog post earlier on the fact that I was ordering Me before you by JoJo Moyes as I saw the film trailer and decided the book was a must read. Well I was discussing at work my new book purchase and how I was looking forward to reading it and how from what i gathered from the trailer I thought it would make me cry. The person I was talking to then proceed to tell me how she had heard about the book, thought about buying it but decided to check the story out on wikipedia instead and then told me the entire ending. THE ENTIRE ENDING AND TWIST! I was like what!!

My face was literally like:

Screen Shot 2016-04-02 at 22.34.08

On the plus side the book arrived and I love the cover. My copy just arrived from book depository. There were other covers but I liked this one the best. (Ignore the copy of Lean in 15! I thought i’d give the recipes a go as it was on offer)

BeautyPlus_20160402223615_save.jpg

On the downside I now have the book but I know the entire story essentially and so don’t want to pick the book up yet.

I mean really why must people give spoilers? Has this ever happened to you?

Affiliations & My blog

I recently decided it was a good idea to sign up to the affiliate programs with both Amazon and Book Depository. I was just approved with both and so thought i’d make a post on it so all you guys knew that if I included a link with an affiliate link I will use an asterisk in my post to show it so you know that I will be upfront about it.

Through the affiliate links I would earn a small percentage if you buy books through my affiliated link. This is not the reason for my blog, it is more to do about sharing my love of books, posting reviews and just fingerling in general, but thought it would be a good idea to sign up to both these programs even if i don’t earn anything through it.

When a film makes you buy a book

I went to the cinema today with some friends and saw the advert to Me before You and recognised that this was a book that i’ve been seeing around Instagram but didn’t know much about. After watching the trailer though I decided I not only have to buy the book but watch the film. I came home and ordered the book straight away. I look forward to reading it. I have a feeling I know how this is going to end. I’m going to end up in the same boat as The Fault in Our Stars, but we shall have to see.

Me after The Fault in Our Stars:
