A series I have no intention of finishing part 3

When I was about 18 years old I went through a Vampire phase ( Twilight may have had some influence on this phase…). I wanted to find a book that I enjoyed as much as I did the Twilight Series. I picked up both the True blood Sookie Stackhouse Series and the House of Night series. As you all know both series have quite a few books in. True Blood has 13 books and House of Night series has 12 books. This is not excessive when compared to something like The In Death series by J.D.Robb, but I am not planning to finish either of these series.

Before my reasoning behind not completing a series has been the length of the series and spoilers but I enjoyed the books I had read in those series so far. My reasn behind not finishing these series is that I’m no longer interested, I do not care how it ends. I found with both books by time I had got to about book 5/6 I was just ok with the story and not enjoying it as much as I had the previous books in the series but I decided to continue with the series at first so I could atleast know what happens in the end. I ahve 9 books in the True blood series and 8 books in the House of night series. Hahaha randomly enough when I read book 8 in both series, at that point thought I decided to discontinue with both. The story lines in both books were no longer working for me and so buying any more books would have been a waste of money and a waste of my time that I could spend reading another book. We bookworms understand how limited reading time can be (sigh) and so I was not wasting it on these books.

With the House of Night series I believe the issue may have been the writing I know the book is written by a mother and daughter duo, at first maybe because I was a teenager too (I’m only 24 but that seems ages ago now) that it did not bug me that much, but by book 6 I really was not enjoying the writing any more and the story seemed repetitive. Zoe the main character was actually grating on my nerves, I think it got to a point where she wanted all the boys and could not decide which one she wanted. I’m not a massive love triangle fan either but it just seemed ridiculous.

With True Blood I think it was getting to the same point. If you have not read True blood and are planning to read it stop reading now as I am going to write a spoiler!!!! You have been warned! Once Sookie was no longer with Bill she just couldn’t decide who she wanted to be with, I think I got to points I wanted to physically shake her. Some people may like that kind of thing but I prefer relationship development, if that makes sense. If the two characters are going to be together on in one book that’s fine, but there’s only so many books I can read with the same character with a different romantic interest. I prefer books where it focuses more on both characters developing their love, like Archer’s voice.

I still have the books in these series that I’ve previously purchased and I may try to reread them to see maybe if I like them better now. If not then these books are in threat of being given away as I need more bookshelf space for books I have purchased and I only like to keep books I like and will reread.

Hope you enjoyed my ramblings. Leave a comment if you’ve completed any of these series or just have an opinion on them.

P.S. I know you think about the Sookie Stackhouse series Anna 😛

Happy Reading!

P.P.S The reason the images on these have weird items on as I combined the photos with some books tags I had to do on my Instagram as I’m too lazy to take more photo’s . If you want to follow me on Instagram.. @hyperaboutbooks

Archangel’s Consort – Nalini Singh (Guild Hunter #3)

I was a tad bit confused on what rating to give this book. Whether it was a 3.5 Star or 4 Star read, the reason behind this is not that I did not enjoy the book or the story line was bad, but it was because some parts of the book confused me such as the bit in there about The Hummingbird.

Warning mature content, this is a Adult Paranormal Romance book and so has multiple sex scenes

Synopsis:

Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux and her lover, the lethally beautiful archangel Raphael, have returned home to New York only to face an uncompromising new evil …A vampire has attacked a girls’ school – the assault one of sheer, vicious madness – and it is only the first act. Rampant bloodlust takes vampire after vampire, threatening to make the streets run with blood. Then Raphael himself begins to show signs of an uncontrolled rage, as inexplicable storms darken the city skyline and the earth itself shudders. The omens are suddenly terrifyingly clear. An ancient and malevolent immortal is rising. The violent winds whisper her name: Caliane. She has returned to reclaim her son, Raphael. Only one thing stands in her way: Elena, the consort who must be destroyed …

Ratings: 3.5 Stars

The book starts off from where the previous book left off. Elena has returned to New York with Raphael. The story line focuses on Calaine coming out of her slumber and causing disruption all over the world. The story was good but I felt that it lacked the intensity of the previous books. There is still romance between Elena and Raphael but this story focuses too much on the sex scenes, I mean there are multiple ones and I actually skipped/skimmed read some because it was just getting too much and not adding anything to the story. Sure they are tastefully done but still I wanted more story!! I have finally figured out what it is about the writing I find odd, sometimes the scenes in the book change too quickly which can leave you confused. The same with some of the dialogue, when two people are speaking it can take a couple of minutes to figure out who spoke what dialogue. These issues aside I still would recommend the book, as you want to know what happens and it’s not a bad book. You can see Raphael developing and he has some really sweet lines and Elena is also developing as a character too.

“You are mine, Elena. If you choose to sleep in another bed, I will simply pick you up and bring you home.”

Sorry this is such a short review, but what I said above I feel covers everything.

Happy Reading!

P.s How cute is my Frozen Elsa Figure?

A series I have no intention of finishing part 2

In Death Series – J D Robb

The In death series by J D Robb is another series I have no intention of finishing. I adored Naked in death, it honestly kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. The romance was amazing and well developed. Both Eve and Roarke were exceptional characters, god what to say about Roarke! I have to share one of my favorite moments from Naked in death.

“I want to see you again.” He stopped, took her face in his hands. “I need to see you again.”

Her pulse jumped, as if it had nothing to do with the rest of her. “Roarke, what’s going on here?”

“Lieutenant.” He leaned forward, touched his lips to hers. “indications are we’re having a romance.”

Read the first 3 books at least! I have read 7 books of this series and own the first 11 books. I will read the books that I have purchased of this series and have not read as yet. So if I find the books so far amazing, why do I not want to continue this series? That my friend is a good question and my answer is it is too long, there are just too many books. Currently there are 40 (yes 40!) books in this series so far, all based on Eve and Roarke and J D Robb plans to continue with this series.  I understand the feeling about never wanting a series to end but that is just too much. I guess if the other books were on different characters then 40 books is a series is not ridiculous but on the same ones. No way.  I love Eve and Roarke I think they are the best thing since sliced bread but I cannot read 40 books. That would bankrupt me if I spent so much money on one series. Plus I do not know if i’d start to feel that the story line is getting repetitive even though it would be a different crime in each book.

So read the 3 books of this series at least! They are amazing. If anyone has read all 40 books then please do share your feelings about the series with me.

Archangel’s Kiss – Nalini Singh (Guild Hunter #2)

How could I not read this once I finished the first book, even though I knew what happens I had to reread it. If you have not read the previous book then scroll away from this page as this will ruin the first book for you! You have been warned. If you do not like posses alpha males then this is not the book for you. On a side note how nice are the covers of this series?

Warning this is an adult book and contains mature content

Archangel’s kiss – Nalini Singh

Synopsis:

Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux wakes from a year-long coma to find herself changed—an angel with wings the colors of midnight and dawn—but her fragile body needs time to heal before she can take flight. Her lover, the stunningly dangerous archangel, Raphael, is used to being in control—especially when it comes to the woman he considers his own. But Elena has never done well with authority.

They’ve barely begun to understand each other when Raphael receives an invitation to a ball from the archangel, Lijuan. To refuse would be a sign of fatal weakness, so Raphael must ready Elena for the flight to Beijing—and to the nightmare that awaits them there. Ancient and without conscience, Lijuan holds a power that lies with the dead. And she has organized the most perfect and most vicious of welcomes for Elena.

Ratings 4 Stars

This books starts at where the previous one left off. Elena is in a coma and has just woken up, a year after the battle with Uram took place. Contrary to speculations of the people of New York Elena is not dead and neither is she a Vampire. Raphael has actually made her into an Angel, she is the first Angel that has been made. Another Angel can only make an Angel once if they produce Ambrosia which can only be produced with true love. Raphael has Elena hidden for her own safety in the Refuge for Angels where they keep their young safe aswell. The reason is in the previous book Elena is a strong character who is a hunter, she is stronger than other humans. However compared to the Angels, Elena’s strength is nothing. She has gone from being high on the food chain to the lowest you can get on the food chain, even baby Angels are stronger than her. It will take time for Elena to grow into her immortality, at the moment certain things can still kill her. You can see Elena tying to adjust and better herself to accept that she is no longer the best and strongest hunter. I felt she grew as a character.

The plot line in this story is Lijian is intrigued with Elena and so has set a ball in her name, also there is an Angel who is looking to replace Uram as an Archangel. It is a good story line, but again with the writing there were sometimes I felt it was a bit odd. I think what I’m trying to say is Nalini Singh can sometimes repeat things that do not need to be repeated or sometime more details are provide than needed. This does not detract from the story though. What I liked about this book is the development in Raphael, there is no major change in him but you can see him softening and can tell he does actually love Elena. He is learning to adjust to make the relationship between him and Elena work. He is still the arrogant ruthless character but the love can be seen in him.

“They didn’t understand that she held his heart, held it so utterly that there was nothing he wouldn’t do, no line he wouldn’t cross to keep her safe.”

The relationship between these two characters is so sweet, I like seeing  it develop considering they were literally through together in hunting the Archangel in the first book. Their relationship kind of reminds me of Eve and Roarke from the In Death series by J.D.Robb, who are one of my favorite couple. Ooohh how Raphael helps Elena with her nightmares is so adorable, though reading about some of Elena’s nightmares creeped me out abit.

I have another favorite angel now, I really want to know more about Aodhan. It was nice seeing the characters in the previous book reappear in this one too. The reason this was a 4 star book is for me it was not as amazing as the previous one but it is still a really good read.

Happy Reading!

Angels’ Blood – Nalini Singh (Guild Hunter #1)

This book does not get enough love. I have only come across 1 person on Instagram who has read it so far. I thought i’d reread this and give it a review so more people can see what a fantastic and pick it up themselves. My love for this book may have to do with the fact that I want my own paid of wings and to be able to fly (It’s not possible I know lol)

Warning this is an adult book, it contains mature content, it has descriptive sex scenes (I feel like I say this about every book I read!). This also contains some bad language and what I feel are some gruesome scenes

Angels’ Blood – Nalini Singh

Synopsis:

Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux knows she is the best- but she does not know if even she is good enough for this job. Hired by the dangerously beautiful archangel Raphael, a being so lethal that no mortal wants his attention, Elena knows failure is not an option—even if the task is impossible.

Because this time, it’s not a wayward vamp she has to track. It’s an archangel gone bad.

The job will put Elena in the midst of a killing spree like no other—and pull her to the razor’s edge of passion. Even if the hunt does not destroy her, succumbing to Raphael’s seductive touch just might. For when archangels play, mortals break.

Rating: 5 Stars

This book has a different take on vampires and vampire hunters. Vampires are not born but they are created, not through a vampire bite but through Angels. Angels ‘make’ a certain number of humans who petition to be a vampire a year. The main benefit of vampirism being the immortality, these vampires do not turn into ash in the sun and can have cool powers depending on who made them. So this is pretty cool right? The catch that being you serve the first 100 years under the angel who makes you as their servant to do as they wish. Elena is a vampire hunter who works for The Guild Hinters. She is given contracts to hunt vampires, not to kill them but capture them and return them to the Angels in charge. Why are vampire hunters needed? They are needed as some vampires feel one they have the immortality and perks who needs to stay in a contract for 100 years and decide to run away. I found this take on vampires very intriguing because it did not follow the norm of vampires. Elena is hunter born which means she hasn’t just trained to be a hunter, it is something she was born to do. She can scent vampires by their own unique scents, which is why she is such an amazing hunter. This is the reason Raphael contracts Elena to take a job on for him. She cannot refuse to do it as Raphael wants the best and who can say no to an Archangel.

At first I really did not think I would like Raphael, he wasn’t cruel in a sense but he was too hard and so I could not see myself warming up to him. What I discovered though was that I did not like Raphael because he was too hard but that was what I found interested about him too. I know it’s a contradiction that I did not understand either… I felt as the book progressed I could see him try and change and see just small subtle changes in him which made me like him.

The last couple of books I have read I noticed have a consistent theme in them. They all have an awesomely amazing heroine in who does not take a back seat and let the hero do the work, but actually works with him or can look after herself. There’s nothing wrong with heroines who need a hero to look after them, I still like to read books like that but I like that Elena is so strong and she stands up to Raphael as if she was a weaker heroine I do not think I would have enjoyed this book as much as I do. I agree with Raphael, Elena is a warrior! The other characters in this book are interesting too you will find yourself wanting to hear their story (Nalini Singh is doing books on Raphael’s seven) If I had to chose a favorite character other than Elena and Raphael it would be Illium, I think he is a sweet character and his wings sound too cool. I really really want to read his story!

The relationship between the two of them is interesting, I like the fact that it is not instant love between the two but it’s attraction which then has a chance to develop into more. The writing style of this book I thought was a tad different, I cannot explain what I mean but it just felt it was different. The story is still fast paced and interesting and you really want to start the book as soon as this one finishes because of the climax.

Read this book! Happy Reading!

Why oh why? Spoilers and a series I have no intention of finishing part 1

There have been many incidents when I have been nosing about on the internet and come across a spoiler which ruins a series for me. I will be doing multiple posts on a series i have no intention of finishing, hence the title aptly named part 1. I like to read reviews before I pick up a book and so appreciate it when other warn the readers that their review or post contains a spoiler. Sometimes I’m not even reading a review, I will stumble across a picture which again ruins a book for me. When I was waiting for book Mockingjay to come out, I did not go on any social media site until I had read the book (luckily i got it the day it came out and finished it 2 days later).

How do you avoid spoilers? Are you still happy to read a book even though you have come across a spoiler?

Vampire Acamedy, Frostbite, Shadow Kiss, Blood Promise.

Do not get me wrong I love the Vampire Academy but I will not be finishing the Vampire Academy series. I stumbled across a spoiler on Goodreads *sigh* but I found out something happens in Last Sacrifice involving Dimitri, Adrian and Rose which I cannot bring myself to read, as I know I will end up hating the book. I do not want this to happen as I loved the series up till now and it was one of the best series I’ve read so far.  Maybe one day I will force myself to read Last Sacrifice as I want to know what happens in the end, but this is not going to happen any time soon. This is just my opinion, I know there are many people who disagree with this but it is just a series I cannot finish.

Why oh why spoilers? Happy Reaading! Hope it’s spoiler free 😀

Wicked Deeds on a Winter’s Night – Kresley Cole (Immortals After Dark Book 3)

I’ve read so many good reviews on this book but I did not like it that much at all. I do think to myself am I reading the same book as everyone else? I personally would not recommend this to someone else as it did not blow me away. It was an Ok read, I thought this the first time I read this but thought I’d give it another chance. Then again maybe I’m missing something and someone else who has read this can tell me what it is. I really wanted to enjoy this book because as I’ve mentioned before I love werewolves, this has a kick ass heroine in and it a romance, but it is just is not for me.

Warning this is an adult book, it contains mature content, recommended for 18+

Synopsis:

Her breathless kiss haunts him…

Bowen MacRieve of the Lykae clan was nearly destroyed when he lost the one woman meant for him. The ruthless warrior grew even colder, never taking another to his bed—until a smoldering encounter with his enemy, Mariketa the Awaited, reawakens his darkest desires. When sinister forces unite against her, the Highlander finds himself using all his strength and skill to keep her alive.

His slow, hot touch is irresistible…

Temporarily stripped of her powers, Mari is forced to take refuge with her sworn adversary. It’s rumored that no one can tempt Bowen’s hardened heart, but soon passion burns between them. Though a future together is impossible, she fears he has no intention of letting her go.

No deed is too wicked for her seduction…

If they defeat the evil that surrounds them, can Mari deny Bowen when he demands her body and soul—or will she risk everything for her fierce protector?

Ratings: 2.5 Stars

Ok so this book starts off with us seeing Bowen take place in the Hie, both he and Mariketa (along with 11 other people) are after the prize of a golden headdress. Bowen for some reason is attracted to Mariketa, which he does not understand as he is in the hie to get back his dead mate. Ofcourse with Bowen being a handsome lykae, Mariketa is attracted to him too and wants him to want to her as much as she wants him at that moment in time. As Lykae are always faithful and want no one other than their mate, Bowen thinks that Mariketa has put an enchantment and is using magic on him. So as we know from No Rest for the Wicked, he traps Mariketa and the 11 others in the cave with the incubus. Admittedly Bowen thinks that they can escape as Mariketa is suppose to be an all powerful witch and the others are immortal so I do not blame Bowen for that. Mariketa does manage to put the non healing spell on Bowen before he traps them though, so he cannot regenerate from his injuries. Once Bowen has been saved from the fire pit, he does go back to save Mariketa (to get the non healing enchantment removed). The book was face paced and there were no boring bits in it, I was just unable to get into it. The writing style was good as it has been in the previous books, even though we have so many different species they are explained well so at no point is the reader confused. My main issue with the book is the romance is due to the mating bond only. If you take away the mating bond and attraction there is not a relationship left. There were a couple of things Bowen did in here that really annoyed me, they being the thing with the birth control, the wrong name thing and what he believes about Mariah and Mariketa.

I was looking forward to Bowen story and I felt so bad for him in A Hunger Like No Other, in that book he gives Emma the advice to communicate with Lachlain and tell him what she feels, also I believe he also mentions to Lachlain that Emma is other and so he cannot treat her with the same rules and to accept her as she is. I do not think Bowen followed the same advise, I felt he tried to change Mariketa too much. Yes I know they get a HEA and he does reconsider his thinking about Witches and vows no that change her or force her to be someone else, but for me that was not enough.

The reason it was an ok read is that Mariketa is an awesome character, she is not the shrinking violet type. The story is good and does not drag in any places and we get little updates on how other characters are doing. Unfortunately even though Bowen was a werewolf that could not increase my love for this book.

Happy Reading!
