New book unboxing – Forbidden Planet

My excitement knows no bounds today as I receive my first order from forbidden planet which contained one of my favourite author’s Nalini Singh books. I love her guild hunter series and have been reading these books for years, and will continue to read the series as there are more books planned. Imagine my disappointment when I learned she was coming to London, which is only an hour and a half drive away from where I live to sign Archangels Enigma at Forbidden Planet but I couldn’t go because of work. I know the joys of working life. However Forbidden Planet the wonderful people that they were selling the signed books for people who wanted them and couldn’t make it. I already own archangels enigma but I couldn’t turn a signed book by one of my favourite authors down. So I ordered it and it finally came today!

So I thought I’d share the unboxing.

Forbidden Planet unfortunately don’t have signed copies of the book left but if you live in the Uk and are interested in purchasing the normal book from them, then click here. This is one of my best book buys this year, it going to be a prized possession on my bookshelf. I paid for this book and the post is not sponsored or anything 🙂

Happy Reading! Has anyone else purchased any new signed book or any book you’re excited about recently?

New books ordered

As you all know I put myself on a book buying ban and I am only allowed to buy a book if I sell ones I already have and do not want to pay for it or read 5 books. Well both things happened this weekend. I have managed to read 5 books on my TBR (some reviews are pending but I’ll get round to them) and I sold some of my other books on Ebay. This means I can buy 2 books! Woohoo!

First of all I need some sort of medal. I have resisted purchasing the Illustrated Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone even though everyone on Instagram and my friends are going on about it. Hopefully I will get this for Christmas or if I sell more books or read 5 more from my TBR. On a side note it is on offer for £15.00 on Book Depository at the moment. The link is here if you want to check it out

So the books I purchased are: Winter and Archangel’s Enigma. I cannot wait to read these books. I am so excited for Naassir’s story. Not as much as I want Bluebell’s story but still. Nalini Singh is an amazing writer and I look forward to reading this book. I also have to say I love that the cover of this book matches the others in this series. It such an awesome cover too.

Winter is the continuation of Marissa Meyer’s The Lunar Chronicles and I am so so excited for it. I really need to post my reviews of the previous books but I’ll get to that! Same with this book, how amazingly cool is the cover of this book?

Interested in the two books I mentioned? I have added the synopsis of both below with a link to Book Depository if you want to check them out (and not I am not being sponsored or paid to include this). I ordered my books from them too.

Book Depository have Winter at the price of £6.29 at the moment which is an amazing offer for the paperback book if you’re interested in purchasing it.

Archangel’s Enigma (Guild Hunter, #8) – Nalini Singh

Naasir is the most feral of the powerful group of vampires and angels known as the Seven, his loyalty pledged to the Archangel Raphael. When rumors surface of a plot to murder the former Archangel of Persia, now lost in the Sleep of the Ancients, Naasir is dispatched to find him. For only he possesses the tracking skills required—those more common to predatory animals than to man.

Enlisted to accompany Naasir, Andromeda, a young angelic scholar with dangerous secrets, is fascinated by his nature—at once playful and brilliant, sensual and brutal. As they race to find the Sleeping archangel before it’s too late, Naasir will force her to question all she knows…and tempt her to walk into the magnificent, feral darkness of his world. But first they must survive an enemy vicious enough to shatter the greatest taboo of the angelic race and plunge the world into a screaming nightmare…

Winter (The Lunar Chronicles, #4) – Marissa Meyer

Princess Winter is admired by the Lunar people for her grace and kindness, and despite the scars that mar her face, her beauty is said to be even more breathtaking than that of her stepmother, Queen Levana.

Winter despises her stepmother, and knows Levana won’t approve of her feelings for her childhood friend—the handsome palace guard, Jacin. But Winter isn’t as weak as Levana believes her to be and she’s been undermining her stepmother’s wishes for years. Together with the cyborg mechanic, Cinder, and her allies, Winter might even have the power to launch a revolution and win a war that’s been raging for far too long.

Can Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, and Winter defeat Levana and find their happily ever afters?

Happy Book Mail!!

Slave to Sensation – Nalini Singh (Psy-Changeling #1)

One more book down from my TBR! Maybe I should buy a book for each one I finish….haha no I won’t do that, it would not solve my problem about lack of space.

This book has been sitting on my kindle for a long time now. I purchased it about a year or so ago as I really love Nailini’s Guild Hunter series. That series is one of my favourites and I love how she writes her characters. In essence usually the female characters are strong willed and a match for their partners which I like to read because there is nothing wrong with a damsel in distress story but sometimes you want a change.

I think I say this a lot but Nalini Singh is one of my favourite authors, I would highly recommend her guild hunter series and after reading this book her other work aswell as long as you are not opposed to sex scenes. I find the story’s that she writes also shows the development and the progression of romance rather than being multiple sex scenes and a happy ending.

In a world that denies emotions, where the ruling Psy punish any sign of desire, Sascha Duncan must conceal the feelings that brand her as flawed. To reveal them would be to sentence herself to the horror of “rehabilitation” – the complete psychic erasure of everything she ever was…

Both human and animal, Lucas Hunter is a changeling hungry for the very sensations the Psy disdain. After centuries of uneasy coexistence, these two races are now on the verge of war over the brutal murders of several changeling women. Lucas is determined to find the Psy killer who butchered his packmate, and Sascha is his ticket into their closely guarded society. But he soon discovers that this ice-cold Psy is very capable of passion – and that the animal in him is fascinated by her. Caught between their conflicting worlds, Lucas and Sascha must remain bound to their identities – or sacrifice everything for a taste of darkest temptation.

Rating: 5 Stars

First Lucas so did not look like the cover of this book in my mind, his scars on his face were so much sexier, well Nalini made it sound so anyway. I adored this book, I could not put it down and literally wanted to finish it in one sitting, which did not happen.

In 1979 to try and end violence and crimes the psy race implemented a protocol called the silence, this would condition the mind and body to stop feeling human or animalistic emotions and therefore be the end of serial killers and violence. Sounds like a perfect plan right? I mean if there are no emotions then there no cause for people to do things like that.

The story kicks off with Sasha being told that she is incharge of overseeing a housing development for the changelings and so she will be working with Lucas Hunter who is a panther alpha of the DarkRiver pack. Sasha is a ‘broken’ psy as she does feel but she is trying to hide it behind a stotic and emotionless facade. The psy do not show affection or casually touch and then we have the changelings who constantly touch and show affection. You can tell the pairing of these two is going to be volatile. Not in a bad way but sparks are going to full and they do.

What to say about Lucas, I loved him from the first page. He was smart, he knew what he wanted, he had determination and he was sweet, which makes a lethal combination and who could resist that?

“She was his and he was hers. They had under-the-skin privileges.”

“An hour of your life is worth more than a thousand people to me.”

Sasha is such strong willed and doesn’t let Lucas walk all over her but also understands when it’s best to let it go as Lucas is an alpha. Sasha is such a brave character, as just imagine growing up and hiding the fact that you are different from everyone else. One slip up and she would have be rehabilitated.

“She wished he’d stop touching her. Not because she didn’t like it but because she liked it far too much. It made her hunger for things that could never be hers. And if someone went hungry for too long, they started to starve. Started to hurt.”

What starts of as a business relationship develops first into friendship, respect, trust, passion and the love. It was so nice to see the evolvement of the relationship between these two. Lucas handled Sasha tenderly at times to introduce her to her and his own emotions and what he wanted. He does not let Sasha stay behind her mask of silence and indifference because he understands her and knows that that is not true, that’s not her nature. Ofcourse Psy and changelings are not suppose to be together, but what’s a good romance without some forbidden love.

The writing of this book is amazing, Nalini is an amazing story teller, it the way the story is written. Even though the psy world is different it was explained is such a way that I understood it and I did not have to go back to reread certain chapters to remind myself of anything which sometimes happens in fantasy books. The style of the writing flows really well, it is engaging, interesting and unique. It is the right balance of romance and action.

All I can say is I really loved this is and will be continuing with the others in this series. Honestly give Nalini Singh’s books a try and you will not regret it.

Happy Reading! p.s. Has anyone else read this book or anything by Nalini Singh?

Archangel’s Blade – Nalini Singh (Guild Hunter #4) – Contains Spoilers

This review contains spoilers. Please do not read it if you do not want the book to be spoiled and haven’t read the previous books.

Warning this is an adult book it contains mature content, some gruesome scenes and contains a sensitive issue. It does not go into graphic details but this book does contain rape.

Archangel’s Blade – Nalini Singh

The severed head marked by a distinctive tattoo on its cheek should have been a Guild case, but dark instincts honed over hundreds of years of life compel the vampire Dmitri to take control. There is something twisted about this death, something that whispers of centuries long past…but Dmitri’s need to discover the truth is nothing to the vicious strength of his response to the hunter assigned to decipher the tattoo.

Savaged in a brutal attack that almost killed her, Honor is nowhere near ready to come face to face with the seductive vampire who is an archangel’s right hand, and who wears his cruelty as boldly as his lethal sensuality…the same vampire who has been her secret obsession since the day she was old enough to understand the inexplicable, violent emotions he aroused in her.

As desire turns into a dangerous compulsion that might destroy them both, it becomes clear the past will not stay buried. Something is hunting…and it will not stop until it brings a blood-soaked nightmare to life once more…

Ratings: 3 Stars (Still undecided about the rating though)

I found reviewing and rating this book really hard. This is not because I did not enjoy the book or I was not engrossed in the story but there were a couple of this Dmitri did that I did not like and I just had some niggles that I cannot get over to give this book a higher rating. My main issue with the book is near the end there is a specific scene in which Dmirti takes advantage of knowledge he gained from Honor about her feelings (can’t think of a better way of putting it) to try and hurt her. This put a damper on my enjoyment of the book. Dmitri decides that Honor knows more about his dead wife that she will not share with him. So he decides to taunt her with his fangs on her neck as he knows of what she suffered in her ordeal with the other vampires. This makes me so angry as he has spend the book helping her overcome her ordeal and punishing the vampires who carried it out. This act made me feel undermined their relationship.

I admit he contemplates trying to hurt her and even starts to but then decides not to as he understands it will completely break her, people may argue that because he didn’t actually hurt her it’s not a big deal. Two words, emotional betrayal. That what he does, he takes advantage of knowledge he has gain from honor because she trusted him and let him in to try and hurt her. At first Honor is upset wit him and asks him to leave her but literally after 5 minutes it’s ok. I’m not she should not forgive Dmitri at all but I do not believe she should forgiven him that easily. For me this did not gel with what how I say Honor, she was suppose to be someone who had been through something horrific and so had issues trusting and letting others in, so for her to forgive Dmirti straight away it did not work for me.

That issue aside the book was a good read, it had a good story and I was intrigued and grateful to get some insight into Dmitri’s thinking. I liked that I got to understand him better as I prefer other member’s on Rapheal’s seven based on previous reads. Both character’s were well developed and I thought Honor was a really good female lead as she worked to overcome her ordeal instead of let it hold her down.

The book is well writing and keeps you engrossed, the story line and good and the synopsis of this book covers the main gist of it. However I have finally figured out what confuses me about the writing sometime, there can be some dialogues between two characters in which it takes you a couple of minutes to work out who said what.

I found it sweet that even after all this time he still loved his wife. You figure out quickly that this book is going to be a reincarnation one. Nalini Singh handled the reincarnation side of this story really well too. I did not feel in this book that Dmitri only loved Honor because she was the reincarnation of his wife. They actually got to know each other, build the relationship and then find out.

Well done to Nalini Singh for another well written book. It’s just a shame I did not enjoy it. Do leave me a comment if you feel differently as I have read lots of 5 star reviews for this book.

Happy Reading!

Archangel’s Consort – Nalini Singh (Guild Hunter #3)

I was a tad bit confused on what rating to give this book. Whether it was a 3.5 Star or 4 Star read, the reason behind this is not that I did not enjoy the book or the story line was bad, but it was because some parts of the book confused me such as the bit in there about The Hummingbird.

Warning mature content, this is a Adult Paranormal Romance book and so has multiple sex scenes

Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux and her lover, the lethally beautiful archangel Raphael, have returned home to New York only to face an uncompromising new evil …A vampire has attacked a girls’ school – the assault one of sheer, vicious madness – and it is only the first act. Rampant bloodlust takes vampire after vampire, threatening to make the streets run with blood. Then Raphael himself begins to show signs of an uncontrolled rage, as inexplicable storms darken the city skyline and the earth itself shudders. The omens are suddenly terrifyingly clear. An ancient and malevolent immortal is rising. The violent winds whisper her name: Caliane. She has returned to reclaim her son, Raphael. Only one thing stands in her way: Elena, the consort who must be destroyed …

Ratings: 3.5 Stars

The book starts off from where the previous book left off. Elena has returned to New York with Raphael. The story line focuses on Calaine coming out of her slumber and causing disruption all over the world. The story was good but I felt that it lacked the intensity of the previous books. There is still romance between Elena and Raphael but this story focuses too much on the sex scenes, I mean there are multiple ones and I actually skipped/skimmed read some because it was just getting too much and not adding anything to the story. Sure they are tastefully done but still I wanted more story!! I have finally figured out what it is about the writing I find odd, sometimes the scenes in the book change too quickly which can leave you confused. The same with some of the dialogue, when two people are speaking it can take a couple of minutes to figure out who spoke what dialogue. These issues aside I still would recommend the book, as you want to know what happens and it’s not a bad book. You can see Raphael developing and he has some really sweet lines and Elena is also developing as a character too.

“You are mine, Elena. If you choose to sleep in another bed, I will simply pick you up and bring you home.”

Sorry this is such a short review, but what I said above I feel covers everything.

Happy Reading!

P.s How cute is my Frozen Elsa Figure?

Archangel’s Kiss – Nalini Singh (Guild Hunter #2)

How could I not read this once I finished the first book, even though I knew what happens I had to reread it. If you have not read the previous book then scroll away from this page as this will ruin the first book for you! You have been warned. If you do not like posses alpha males then this is not the book for you. On a side note how nice are the covers of this series?

Warning this is an adult book and contains mature content

Archangel’s kiss – Nalini Singh

Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux wakes from a year-long coma to find herself changed—an angel with wings the colors of midnight and dawn—but her fragile body needs time to heal before she can take flight. Her lover, the stunningly dangerous archangel, Raphael, is used to being in control—especially when it comes to the woman he considers his own. But Elena has never done well with authority.

They’ve barely begun to understand each other when Raphael receives an invitation to a ball from the archangel, Lijuan. To refuse would be a sign of fatal weakness, so Raphael must ready Elena for the flight to Beijing—and to the nightmare that awaits them there. Ancient and without conscience, Lijuan holds a power that lies with the dead. And she has organized the most perfect and most vicious of welcomes for Elena.

Ratings 4 Stars

This books starts at where the previous one left off. Elena is in a coma and has just woken up, a year after the battle with Uram took place. Contrary to speculations of the people of New York Elena is not dead and neither is she a Vampire. Raphael has actually made her into an Angel, she is the first Angel that has been made. Another Angel can only make an Angel once if they produce Ambrosia which can only be produced with true love. Raphael has Elena hidden for her own safety in the Refuge for Angels where they keep their young safe aswell. The reason is in the previous book Elena is a strong character who is a hunter, she is stronger than other humans. However compared to the Angels, Elena’s strength is nothing. She has gone from being high on the food chain to the lowest you can get on the food chain, even baby Angels are stronger than her. It will take time for Elena to grow into her immortality, at the moment certain things can still kill her. You can see Elena tying to adjust and better herself to accept that she is no longer the best and strongest hunter. I felt she grew as a character.

The plot line in this story is Lijian is intrigued with Elena and so has set a ball in her name, also there is an Angel who is looking to replace Uram as an Archangel. It is a good story line, but again with the writing there were sometimes I felt it was a bit odd. I think what I’m trying to say is Nalini Singh can sometimes repeat things that do not need to be repeated or sometime more details are provide than needed. This does not detract from the story though. What I liked about this book is the development in Raphael, there is no major change in him but you can see him softening and can tell he does actually love Elena. He is learning to adjust to make the relationship between him and Elena work. He is still the arrogant ruthless character but the love can be seen in him.

“They didn’t understand that she held his heart, held it so utterly that there was nothing he wouldn’t do, no line he wouldn’t cross to keep her safe.”

The relationship between these two characters is so sweet, I like seeing  it develop considering they were literally through together in hunting the Archangel in the first book. Their relationship kind of reminds me of Eve and Roarke from the In Death series by J.D.Robb, who are one of my favorite couple. Ooohh how Raphael helps Elena with her nightmares is so adorable, though reading about some of Elena’s nightmares creeped me out abit.

I have another favorite angel now, I really want to know more about Aodhan. It was nice seeing the characters in the previous book reappear in this one too. The reason this was a 4 star book is for me it was not as amazing as the previous one but it is still a really good read.

Happy Reading!

Angels’ Blood – Nalini Singh (Guild Hunter #1)

This book does not get enough love. I have only come across 1 person on Instagram who has read it so far. I thought i’d reread this and give it a review so more people can see what a fantastic and pick it up themselves. My love for this book may have to do with the fact that I want my own paid of wings and to be able to fly (It’s not possible I know lol)

Warning this is an adult book, it contains mature content, it has descriptive sex scenes (I feel like I say this about every book I read!). This also contains some bad language and what I feel are some gruesome scenes

Angels’ Blood – Nalini Singh

Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux knows she is the best- but she does not know if even she is good enough for this job. Hired by the dangerously beautiful archangel Raphael, a being so lethal that no mortal wants his attention, Elena knows failure is not an option—even if the task is impossible.

Because this time, it’s not a wayward vamp she has to track. It’s an archangel gone bad.

The job will put Elena in the midst of a killing spree like no other—and pull her to the razor’s edge of passion. Even if the hunt does not destroy her, succumbing to Raphael’s seductive touch just might. For when archangels play, mortals break.

Rating: 5 Stars

This book has a different take on vampires and vampire hunters. Vampires are not born but they are created, not through a vampire bite but through Angels. Angels ‘make’ a certain number of humans who petition to be a vampire a year. The main benefit of vampirism being the immortality, these vampires do not turn into ash in the sun and can have cool powers depending on who made them. So this is pretty cool right? The catch that being you serve the first 100 years under the angel who makes you as their servant to do as they wish. Elena is a vampire hunter who works for The Guild Hinters. She is given contracts to hunt vampires, not to kill them but capture them and return them to the Angels in charge. Why are vampire hunters needed? They are needed as some vampires feel one they have the immortality and perks who needs to stay in a contract for 100 years and decide to run away. I found this take on vampires very intriguing because it did not follow the norm of vampires. Elena is hunter born which means she hasn’t just trained to be a hunter, it is something she was born to do. She can scent vampires by their own unique scents, which is why she is such an amazing hunter. This is the reason Raphael contracts Elena to take a job on for him. She cannot refuse to do it as Raphael wants the best and who can say no to an Archangel.

At first I really did not think I would like Raphael, he wasn’t cruel in a sense but he was too hard and so I could not see myself warming up to him. What I discovered though was that I did not like Raphael because he was too hard but that was what I found interested about him too. I know it’s a contradiction that I did not understand either… I felt as the book progressed I could see him try and change and see just small subtle changes in him which made me like him.

The last couple of books I have read I noticed have a consistent theme in them. They all have an awesomely amazing heroine in who does not take a back seat and let the hero do the work, but actually works with him or can look after herself. There’s nothing wrong with heroines who need a hero to look after them, I still like to read books like that but I like that Elena is so strong and she stands up to Raphael as if she was a weaker heroine I do not think I would have enjoyed this book as much as I do. I agree with Raphael, Elena is a warrior! The other characters in this book are interesting too you will find yourself wanting to hear their story (Nalini Singh is doing books on Raphael’s seven) If I had to chose a favorite character other than Elena and Raphael it would be Illium, I think he is a sweet character and his wings sound too cool. I really really want to read his story!

The relationship between the two of them is interesting, I like the fact that it is not instant love between the two but it’s attraction which then has a chance to develop into more. The writing style of this book I thought was a tad different, I cannot explain what I mean but it just felt it was different. The story is still fast paced and interesting and you really want to start the book as soon as this one finishes because of the climax.

Read this book! Happy Reading!
