2014 in review

Seeing this make me so happy! Thank you so much to everyone who has checked out and followed my blog 🙂

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2014 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 2,300 times in 2014. If it were a cable car, it would take about 38 trips to carry that many people.

A Shameless Angel – Elizabeth Cole (Secrets of the Zodiac Book 3) – Review contains spoilers

I downloaded this ARC from Netgallery in exchange for a honest review. The book has been released, it came out on 23rd September. You can find more information about it on Amazon, click here.

Even though this was a third book in a series I had no problem picking up the story, it can be read as a standalone you do not have to read the first two books before this.

Warning this review contains spoilers.

Synopsis:

A courageous codebreaker, a gentleman with a score to settle, and a past that refuses to stay hidden…

Sarah Brecknell has always had an unusual obsession with numbers. After the unfortunate death of her fiancé, she’s lost her place in society, and her gift has left her alone with a dangerous secret. Sarah must turn to a complete stranger for help–a secret agent in service to the Crown. She has already made one mistake in love. She can’t afford another.

Theodore Markham has plenty of secrets of his own, not least of which his occupation as a spy. Now he is hunting for a traitor. This time is different, though–the rogue was his best friend. The trail goes cold until he meets Sarah, a woman with extraordinary mathematical talents…and an irresistible charm that may be even more dangerous than his adversary.

Rating: 3.5 Stars

I enjoyed this book, it had enough of a mystery and suspense to make you keep wanting to read it to find out what happens next. The books starts off with Charlie’s funeral. He was Sarah’s fiancée and the official story was that he was killed in a highwayman robbery gone wrong, Sarah meets Theo at the funeral as he introduces himself as a friend of Charlie. Sarah is heart broken, and the author wrote the funeral and the following couple of days for Sarah so well that it made me feel upset for her. I thought the book handled the way people grieve well. I showed how Sarah was heart broken after Charlie’s death and always thinking about him, to how it can change to not thinking as much about the person at times but then feeling guilty because it seems like your forgetting about that person even though you’re not.

Initially I thought Sarah was unassuming but Sarah had a witty side. She was a good main character, you wanted her to succeed and solve the mystery. I think one of my favourite quotes of hers was when she asked Theo for his help and she explained how she knew all about the secret spies group Zodiac and how she had guessed about it rather than being told about it.

“It’s not as if it were a particularly challenging puzzle…A random collection of names would have been better”

I liked Theo aswell, but not as much as I liked Sarah for some reason. He was witty and sweet, the scene where he was playing with his niece was so cute. He came across as someone who likes and would be good with children. I think my issue with Theo is that he was engaged to someone else in the book. So technically when he kissed or was with Sarah he was cheating on his fiancée. I know in the book it is explained that Theo and his fiancée are more friends than feeling any passion for each other but I just believe that if you want to be with someone else come out of any other relationship first. I do understand that this was hard in the time period the book is set in but that’s just my thought and so that affect my enjoyment of the book.

I wanted to do a happy dance when finally someone talked sense to Theo. I’m glad Julian gave him advice about having a talk with his fiancée because otherwise I’m sure Theo would have sacrificed his love for Sarah as he though he could not hurt his fiancée.

This book was a good read, if you enjoy a historical romance with some intrigue then give it ago.

Happy Reading!!

Off Sides – Sawyer Bennett (Off Book 1)

This book contains some mature content.

Synopsis:

“I’m not sure what possessed me to do it. Maybe it was the impossible expectations I faced, maybe it was my own self-loathing. But I just knew I needed something different to happen. I needed someone… something… to derail me from my current path. Otherwise, I would become lost… a hollowed out shell of a man. So I did it. I approached her, then I pursued her, then I made her mine. And my life was saved…”

Ryan Burnham is the privileged son of a U.S. Congressman and captain of his university’s hockey team. While he is on the verge of fulfilling his dreams to play in the NHL, his parents want him on a different course. One he is expected to accept for the sake of his family’s public image.

Forced her to abandon her music career after the heart breaking death of her parents, Danny Cross exists on the opposite side of the tracks from Ryan. She is struggling to make her own way, working two jobs, attending college part time and volunteering in a homeless shelter. She is on a mission to build her own success.

With a chance meeting, their vastly different worlds collide, causing each to evaluate whether they are truly on the correct path to self-fulfillment and happiness. Can their relationship survive? Particularly when others are against them every step of the way. A lot can happen in just ten short days…

Rating: 5 Star

I really am turning into a sappy person. This story was just so heart warming and beautiful, I could feel the love between then the two characters. I cannot believe it was a free download, I would have happily paid for this book. I will be purchasing the other books in this series. This is a standalone novel but there are books on other characters.

Ok where are these guys like Ryan? Do they exist? He is just so amazing that words fail me, it was the fact that he was sweet, he knew what he wanted, he respected Danny and was not afraid to admit he loves her. The fact that he is also hot does not matter (well much), as his character was just so loveable. He reminded of Noah from Pushing the Limits. I think more New Adult and Young Adult should have a character like him rather than jerks. Do not get me wrong I also like the jerk thing but too many YA books are like this and sometimes I think there no love between the main characters but lust instead.

This book contained the most important thing for me in a relationship: communication. I honestly go on and on about this but I hate when 70% of the book could have been avoided if the characters just spoke to each other. Thankfully in this book they do speak and support each other. Both characters are open and honest (barring one part) which is amazing!

This was such a nice short and sweet read. Both Ryan and Danny were well developed characters and I felt they were mature for their ages. Ryan was an amazing character, I really like that he holds Danny when she cries rather than finding it really awkward, it just for me shows he cares. The secondary characters were interesting, I really liked Mike. I’m glad Mike was such a good friend to Ryan and he gave him words of wisdoms on relationships . I look forward to reading Mike’s story.

What I like most about Ryan is sure he comes from money and so does not realise how other half live but he has the compassion to help and admit he should try to do more for those less fortune than him.

“It’s just…I make a flippant remark that the bowl of soup wasn’t enough to fill me up. Then I order a plate of nachos. Those people back at the shelter…that bowl of soup is all they are getting tonight. I just realized…”

Plus I loved how he saw Danny and just knew, even though she was different to what he normally preferred. Danny was a strong female character to, she knew how to stand up for herself which was nice. I really enjoyed the writing in this book and defiantly will be checking out more books by this author.

She’s stunning. No, unique. No… that’s not it. Uniquely stunning…that’s what she is.

Happy Reading!!

For Love of Charley – Katherine Allred

Katherine Allred is one of my favourite authors, I adore her work. There’s just something about her writing and characters that connect with my heart, there are just beautiful stories. Though this one has not been my absolute favourite of hers I still love it. Maybe I’m turning into a major sap but at the start there were parts that brought tears to my eyes.

This book contains some mild suggestive scenes.

Don’t know what the cover of this book is about, it defiantly does not match the content of it. The story in this is a sweet one and it does not contain graphic scenes or anything. Do not let the cover of the book put you off, it really is a beautiful love story.

Synopsis:

It’s been ten years since Cole Jordan was run out of Canyon Bend, ten years he spent accumulating a vast fortune. Now he’s back with only one goal in mind. To win the woman he left behind, the woman he never forgot. This time, not even her wealthy, overprotective uncle will stop him. Because everything he’s done, he’s done for love of Charley. After Cole made passionate love to her one night, he vanished without a word, so Charley doesn’t trust him worth a damn when he reappears. Especially when she discovers it’s his company that bought half of her business, the Red Dog Saloon. But Cole has big plans for the town that once shunned him, and as Charley finds herself working with him daily, the love she’s tried so hard to suppress blooms again. Only one thing stands in their way; Cole’s refusal to tell her why he left so abruptly. While they fight their way back to each other, outside influences work to keep them apart at any cost…even death.

Rating: 4 Stars

I’m not usually a fan of second chance love story for some reason. I believe it’s because I’m a romantic at heart and so cannot take the pain of wasted years even if the couple get a happy ending. I want everyone to have a happy ending straight away. Though as Katherine Allred is one of my favourite authors I had to read this book.

Ahhhh what to say about this book. The love story is beautiful, and you can feel the love and pain of separation in both of the main characters. It is not the best Katherine Allred book, that for me would be What Price Paradise but this is still a lovely read. I will admit Cole ‘plan’ to ignore Charley and pretend he’s only interested in the business side was a silly idea, but I cannot complain as it happened to work and when Charley showed more of a interest in him, he did not pretend indifference but they communicated and talked instead.

“Good. I want her to be impressed. I just don’t want her to think I’m trying to do it.” “And they say women are devious.”

Cole was sweet, to think he worked so hard 10 years just for Charley. He did it to be good enough for her, sure he should have spoken to Charley about his reason for leaving before actually leaving her. I think it’s adorable that no one else came into either Cole or Charley’s lives as they both loved each other so much even when they weren’t together.

“I’ve missed you, too, baby,” he whispered. “You’ll never know how much. And as hard as it will be to wait, I’ll give you all the time you need to trust me again. I won’t push you.” He leaned over and brushed her lips with his. “I love you, Charley.”

The writing sometimes really got to me, it just the way the book is written is beautiful. The words and characters touch your heart.

How do you stop a body, heart and soul that have only been half alive from reaching out to the one thing that can make them whole?

The reason this book is not a 5 star for me is because the last 15% of the book I though was a little odd, as in it came out of nowhere. It was not something I expected, I guess what could be a good thing as it was a twist but I thought it was just sprung on the reader. I am glad I read this book though as it was lovely. It was a nice easy read, there was not too much angst or Cole was not a massive jerk/stalker so it was a nice change to what I normally read.

Honestly if you have not read a Katherine Allred book then you are missing out.

Happy Reading!

What is a love triangle?

I do not own this image it was taken from the internet.

I have recently been inform by a very knowledgeable source (my cousin) that I do not understand the definition of a love triangle and I am misinformed about what a love triangle is. This conversation came about as we were talking about Mockingjay Part 1. If you haven’t seen it then you are missing out and stop reading this blog post as it may spoil it for you.

The official definition (according to Wikipedia) of a love triangle is “A love triangle is usually a romantic relationship involving three people. While it can refer to two people independently romantically linked with a third, it usually implies that each of the three people has some kind of relationship to the other two”.

For me this means if the main character likes more than 1 person that is a love triangle. Also if the main character knows someone likes them and encourages them or atleast does not inform them that they are not interested in the same way as they are interested in someone else that to me is a love triangle.

I brought up the point I was angry that Katniss kisses Gale in Mockingjay while spending all of the film wanting Peeta back. I personally think that was not fair on either Peeta or Gale as she was encouraging Gale by kissing him while also wanting Peeta. So this to me is a love triangle. My cousin’s argument was that Katniss is not committed to either Gale or Peeta and has not declared her love to either so it is not a love triangle. She is not encouraging either as she herself does not know she is in love. I can see the point that my cousin was trying to make however I would still class this as a love triangle as Katniss knows how Peeta feels and must have an idea about how Gale feels too but she is still undecided between the two.

The relationship between Bella, Edward and Jacob cannot be called anything other than a love triangle because Bella declares her love for both characters, however does say she loves one more than the other. These kind of triangles are the bane of my existence, I avoid book that have these kind of love triangles in.

Now if a book has a main character in who is in a relationship, married or otherwise as long as they are in a committed relationship and they then find someone else or get with some else while in that relationship (but are unsure of who they want) I would not refer to this as a love triangle, because that is cheating. I am going to a entire separate post on cheating as I recently watched The Crucible play and so have some thoughts that apply to books too about it.

The grey area of love is if a person has not committed to someone and knows they like one person but does not stop interest from another character then is this a love triangle? So the overall question is what is the definition of a love triangle?
